You've already limited the scope by saying the words "my" and "nerd."
Nerds don't make up the crux of the gaming industry. Your average
gamer is not going to spend four digits to play a few games.

No? What about those who bought a 360 or PS3 near their release date?
Throw in a few accessories, couple of games, and you're pushing a grand
right there - and that's before you factor in the large screen TV and
surround sound system.

I bought an Xbox 360 during the second shipment in December 2005. I
spent $400 on the system itself, $50 on an extra wireless controller,
$20 on a play-and-charge kit, and $180 on 3 games. That's $650 for
everything I needed to play since I already owned a television and a
sound system (most people just use the television speakers).

If you want to talk "television" and "surround sound system" then you
better add $500+ to the price of your computer for a decent-sized
monitor of acceptable quality and $100+ on a good set of surround
speakers for the PC (plus whatever it costs nowadays to get a good
sound card that can handle those surround speakers).

Even if you purchased a Playstation 3 at launch, you're still only
talking about $850 for everything you need to play. As you said in
another message, a decent PC that can play even future games (unless
they're called Crysis) at reasonable levelsd is going to cost you
about $1200... before any games, before the speakers, before a good
sound card, before a monitor.

Unless, of course, you start talking about geeks who actually know
it's better, if more difficult, to put together a PC from scratch
rather than buy one off the shelf at Dell.com.

Yes, I know that the TV and sound system can be used for other tasks, but
then you could say the same thing about most of the hardware in the PC as
well.

Yes, but most people, gamer or not, are going to have a PC already.
Most people are not going to open up the computer to install new
components, they're going to buy a new PC outright if they want to
upgrade. Most of these other tasks can be done on computers 5-6 years
old, if not more. I have a PC I put together in 2000 that does all the
web browsing, word processing, Mine Sweeper, etc. I need.

Therefore, the average person choosing to get into PC gaming now would
probably have to buy one of your $1200 machines for really the sole
purpose of playing games.

In fact about the only part in a PC that arguably is only used for
gaming is the high-end graphics card - many of which cost about the same
as a game console.

You're doing it wrong if you're spending that much (or more) on a yearly
basis on your PC.

If you buy a high-end graphics card now, you'll be able to play a lot
of games down the line but the quality will get worse and worse as
time goes on. My graphics card was good enough to play Half-Life 2 and
Doom 3 at decent levels when they first came out on the PC. I might be
able to play BioShock, but at a level that looks like the Xbox 360
took a dump on my screen.

If you want a reasonable visual experience consistently as years go
on, you have to upgrade your video card relatively frequently... more
frequently than buying the next generation of a console.
