I got my 40Gb Playstation 3 yesterday. I didn't do the Wal-mart thing
because I decided at the last minute that sitting outside in 25 degree
weather for 7 hours wasn't worth the 4 or so good movies available
(and the 6 or so I'd have to just sell on eBay for hardly tons of
money). I do regret not being able to play any Playstation 2 games but
this is mainly a Blu-Ray player, anyway.
The first things I downloaded were the Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted
demos. The first one I tried was Ratchet & Clank and was dismayed to
find that I had to install the demos after waiting to download them.
Installation took even longer than the download time! Ugh...
What's worse... the game kept crashing my system. I deleted it and
tried out Uncharted and it worked just fine. I've got to say that it
is pretty fun although it's kind of a disappointment graphically after
reading what some people on this newsgroup were saying about it. I
believe it was boodybandit who kept saying that it was the best
looking game on any system. It may be but I'm not sure because there
was nothing mind-blowing to me about it. That said, it does look
great.
I downloaded a bunch of trailers, too. Those worked fine. I hadn't
seen the Sweeney Todd trailer yet so that was cool.
I also played around with photos and videos and whatnot. It was a bit
annoying because I didn't realize that I had to put things in folders
called "PHOTO" and "VIDEO." That's a bit retarded but maybe I should
have known better since I do own a PSP. Nevertheless, the manual
should have said something about this... I had to dig it up off Sony's
PS3 website.
I haven't had luck playing any MP4 files, though... anyone have any
hints on how to do this? I generally can get sound but just no video
at all... pitch black.
I just redownloaded, reinstalled and restarted Ratchet & Clank and it
worked fine this time. I watched the opening scene but haven't had a
chance to play it yet (had to go pick up the nanny from the train
station). The cutscene looked REALLY nice, though. Again, nothing mind-
blowing, but it does look like a Pixar-level movie (although I did
notice a few slowdowns in the very beginning which is odd since this
was running off the hard drive).
yup I got the slowdowns in the very beginning, but didn't happen again. R&C is the only game where I thought the ingame graphics were better than the cutscenes
Overall, it's not at all a bad system performance wise. There are some
usability issues that are grating me (since I'm a usability specialist
by trade). The one that really got me was turning the system off. I
did eventually find out how by looking through the manual but it was
odd to me that touching the power "icon" didn't shut off the system.
Press and hold the "icon" to put it into standby mode, the same if you press and hold the "P" button on the controller.
Another problem I have is with the store. The navigation scheme is
absolutely horrid. Since hitting the "X" button naturally progresses
you forward, hitting the "O" button (or whatever is in the same
position as the Xbox 360's "B" button) should move you back a step but
instead it exits you out of the store. You have to use this retarded
"PREVIOUS" link at the bottom which is next to a "NEXT" link, implying
they're used to navigate through the elements within your current
context, not the breadcrumb trail.
One thing about the store I will praise is using actual money for
pricing instead of stupid Microsoft or Wii points. MUCH better.
Didn't you find downloading games took forever? Give me Live any day for this.
