Paramount and DreamWorks have announced that first-week DVD sales of
Transformers totaled 8.3 million copies, with more than half of them sold on
the first day, a record for 2007.

The depressing stat is that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD combined sold a total
of around 4 million discs year to date. So a single DVD title out sold
all HD media combined on the first day of sales.

DVD doesn't appear to be going anywhere and neither HD format is
catching fire.

It honestly seems most likely to me, and surely to others, that neither Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD will win this war. I honestly think that downloadable content is what people will prefer. Let's face it, DVD is good enough for classrooms, good enough for computer monitors, for people watching movies on the go on their laptops, for people watching movies on the go with their portable DVD players, for people with TV's from the previous decade that still work fine and so on. In fact, people find the DVD image to be spectacular and don't see the need for high-def. The only thing that they wish they wouldn't have to do anymore is go all the way to Blockbuster to rent a movie when they're tired and lazy. That's where downloadable movies from the 360, the PS3 or even directly from the cable service comes in. My digital cable allows me to watch a gigantic selection of movies, download it in seconds, then watch it as much as i want over a 24 hour period with the option of fast-forwarding, pausing and rewinding as much as I want. That's speed and convenience, something neither HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray offers.
