It will be interested when SONY makes the $399 PS3 announcement in the
US how well it does. Its sales will improve. But we're looking at two
discontinued PS3 models in the US already, first partial backwards
compatibility, now no backwards compatibility, media card readers are
gone.

WTF?! There's absolutely no backwards compatibility in the $399 PS3?!

I didn't know *THAT* aspect of the system. That certainly puts a
damper on things. I figured with the software emulation in there, it
would be a no-brainer for a lot of people.

I'm sure Sony will still be able to sell a decent amount of these just
based on the next-generation aspect, but they'll definitely lose out
in sales if there is ZERO backwards compatibility... hell, even the
Xbox 360 has some.

Regarding the memory cards I have said those were useless
features to begin with, but the loss backwards compatibility is a big
deal. It is more important for SONY to get the $399 price point
however, so this is a good move on their part. The problem is too
little, too late and convoluted system architecture which is causing
game delays. The new price point is good, but given the competitions
strong game line up and slight price advantage, the negative impact of
PS3's major "system seller" holidays titles (GTA IV, MGS, UT3) now
being pushed back does the PS3 stand a chance against Microsoft's
strongest line up ever and Nintendo's strong trademark games.

I say no chance in hell.

Those like yourself who rationalize this, seem to do so entirely
around the SONY brand recondition combed with Microsoft's quality
issues. It's a very weak case to be given what Microsoft has done to
correct the problem.

To be fair, a lot of us seriously don't care about the ability to play old
games. When I bought the 360, I never thought 'hurray, I'll be able to play
old Xbox games again.' I only really want to play new games.

I seriously see the 40gb PS3 as a step in the right direction. I still won't
buy a Sony product though.

I'm sure there are people who have absolutely no interest in playing
Xbox or Playstation 2 games going forward. On the other hand, there
are at least as many, and likely a lot more, people who have libraries
of Xbox or Playstation 2 games that they have not yet completed or
know of games they were not able to play yet. Backwards compatibility
allows these people to play these games without having to connect
their old system.

Also consider people looking to buy a next-gen system who never played
any of the games on the previous systems because they weren't gamers
before or just never bothered buying a competing system. The lack of
backwards compatibility is a hit against the next-gen system. It may
not be a huge negative, but it's a negative nonetheless.

To be fair, the Xbox was never big to begin with, so it's very
possible that a lack of backwards compatibility with Xbox games may
not have hurt the Xbox 360 all that much (keeping in mind there were
plenty of people playing Halo 2 online using their Xbox 360 systems).

On the other hand, the fact that the Playstation 2 is still selling
fairly well, far exceeding the Playstation 3 in monthly sales numbers,
supports the notion that there are many people out there who are still
interested in playing PS2 games.

Now, if the $399 PS3 had backwards compatibility to some extent, it
could mean the difference between someone purchasing a PS2 and someone
purchasing that $399 PS3 model. It's not a stretch to predict that
Sony will lose a decent number of sales of even a PS3 priced at $399
because it eliminates playing any PS2 titles.
