If it would not be so funny I would actually be upset. You have the
biggest Company MS Put out a console that has a major flaw. How can I
say this? bear with me a moment and I will explain and tell you what
MS Won't. I purchased a refurbished XBOX 360 from a reliable Store
outlet.
It seemed to be working fine till I Tried viewing a DVD. I then got
the dreaded 3 RROD Which at first was a surprise because I Thought
refurbished fixes the problem. I tried the Towel trick where you keep
the unit on and cover it for 10 min, thus overheating it. Heck its
broken anyway.
I then let it cool and pushed the power button and to my amazement
it
works again. Now I went from being a bit upset to amazement. But how
exactly does overheating an electrical device which we all know is
bad , actually fixes it (perhaps only temporarily).
The Root of the answer is why MS Is being so Hush hush about the
360's problems with the 3 red lights of death. You see the only thing
that could be happening in the unit that changes under extreme heat
is
the solder is melting even ever so slightly but enough to reconnect
the MB To the GPU Chip. I got some info online and the problem does
seem to be the MB Warping under the Great heat the chip puts out and
the solder while hot is not melting but cracking. Thus causing the 3
red rings. When you use the towel trick its melting the solder to the
point of reattaching those broken areas. at least thats the laymans
terms. There really is no Permanent fix unless you redesign machine
with better clamps , cooler CPU/GPU AND A BETTER heatsink.
To put it in a few words: Wait for The Falcon Chips and see the
results. If the 360's still are failing , I give up.

I agree that, on paper, the falcon mobo with the 65nm fab procs should
reduce the overheating problems, causing the RROD.

However, I think the future 360s with the new mobo/proc/heatsinks will
still experience far greater failure rate than the PS3s.
