Scaling on LCD monitors

If you're using an xbox 360 resolution that doesn't exactly match up
with the native resolution of your LCD monitor, does it scale the
image in a smooth, good looking way similar to what photoshop would
do, or is it done crudely? Also, which one does the scaling - the xbox
or the monitor?
