You cannot uninstall WMP, you simply hide it, and make it unavailable as to
make another player the default. You can do this with IE also, excpet you
need IE for Windows Updates. This is possib le with XP, but it is different
with Vista, as you simply deny access to programs as you please.
How much more simple do they need to make it? That's exactly the same
effect as uninstalling it and it walks you through the process when
you click 'remove'. I don't see why people are complaining about WMP
being bundled with Windows, if you want to use something else, then
use it. It's like complaining that you got a free scoop of ice cream
because it wasn't your favorite flavor.
Well, it isn't that simple. First, it isn't the same as "uninstalling", it still remains readily useable; it is simply removed from view in all listings (in XP), except the actual program folders file (or wherever it resides). In Vista, you actuall deny the use of it (from an administrator logon). If something requires the use of WMP, it will be used. The fact is, IE, and WMP are tied into the total use of Windows, and that isn't a choice, and it gives the effect that you don't need another format, hence the anti-trust lawsuits.
Try browsing your folders without IE on your system, you can't, because it is the engine that runs "windows explorer". To me that is the only issue. On the flipside, anyone can install another browser and a media player, or whatever. Nearly all of them have the ability to make it the cefault program, and everything related to its default will use that program to open them up, so in that sense, it lessens the issue. In a slight defense of MS (which I really do not like MS tactics), they can claim that having their respective default browsers/media players on other operating systems, (Linux distros/ Macs, etc) are anti-competitive. Bottom line is, you have to have a interent browser as past of an OS, or how would one start up the internet. They have a choice afterwards to install and use on of their choice.
Bottom line is, MS makes Windows, and I don't think it is fair (to an extent) that when one installs the OS fresh, that they have a choice of browsers to install, and not to use. Can you imagine MS allowing Firefox as part of the actual installation, I can't, but it would be nice.
I am unsure if IE can be used on Linux distros though, but who would want to anyway.
