So what's going on with this?
Signs are pointing to Sony being a company that's strapped for cash.
They still have that $700,000,000 loan hanging over their head,
they're selling the PS3 at a loss, Blu-Ray has yet to catch fire, they
are going to start selling shares in one of their few profitable
divisions to raise $3 billion (http://www.fool.com/investing/general/
2007/09/10/sonys-financial-windfall.aspx), and this is the second time
they've sold off chip manufacturing to another company.
I expect the financial news out of Sony is just going to get worse and
worse. We'll start hearing buyout rumors soon.

p.s. Do they REALLY want to put Cell production in the hands of one of
the HD-DVD consortium? "Hmmm... Well, the only Blu-Ray player that's
selling is the PS3, oh, look, we have the only manufacturing plant for
the PS3 CPU... (shut down)... well, there goes the PS3 and Blu-Ray and
Sony..." There is a precedent for this with the fate of Digital's
Alpha chip. Fascinating story there... Digital had this fireball of a
CPU, Microsoft even made a special version of Windows NT for it...
well Compaq wasn't happy that their server line was being out done by
these Alpha servers so they bought Digital and canned the Alpha CPU.
