The PS2 was by far the most successful console of the previous

This is only possible because the PS2 won the previous generation.
With that logic, Xbox 1 was dumped because of a small install base.>From what I call, Microsoft dumped the console in its prime. Why?
Your powers of recollection are shaky here. By the time Microsoft
"dropped" the Xbox, the Xbox 360 was almost ready for launch.
Simply to make more $$$. Microsoft doesn't care about giving gamers a
great experience. They want your money, plain and simple. Why put
your trust in a company that has a history of creating monopolies and
charging outrageous prices for their software?
Sony doesn't want anybody's money. Riiiiiiiiiight.
Your contention is flawed. The only reason the Playstation 2 is still
around is because of the sole fact that Sony is still making a decent
amount of money from it. Do you really think that if the Playstation 2
didn't have such a huge install base and fans weren't buying games for
it, Sony would bother keeping it around?
Microsoft dropped the Xbox because they were ready to bring out the
next generation of their system. The install base had stopped growing
for a while and they figured it would be better to offer up better
gaming experiences than stick with the status quo with only a small
percentage of the video game console market.
It would have been irrational from a business perspective for
Microsoft to have stuck with the Xbox. Why would you continue to make
a console, and approve games for it, when a relatively small
percentage of the market wants it?
You can't list something that requires the console to be a success as
a reason for people to make the console a success.
It's called a proven track record. Just like I know that a new
Blizzard game is going to be good. The odds that Ps3 will simply die
off are slim to none. The odds are better that Sony will be
supporting the PS3 for many years to come.
The Playstation was successful because it offered a "more mature"
alternative to the Nintendo platform. Sony did what Nintendo is doing
now... bringing in people who didn't play console video games before
and bringing back people who gave up gaming for any number of reasons.
Sony expanded the market because they offered something people who
weren't part of the market wanted.
The initial success of the Playstation caused more developers to want
to make games for it, foregoing the Saturn and the 64. More games
brought in even more gamers and the cycle kept going for years.
The Playstation 2 thrived on the brand loyalty created by its
predecessor. Its only competition, if you can even call it that, was
the Dreamcast, which lacked the same amount of third-party support
because of the failure of the Saturn.
Things are different this time around, though. With the launch of the
Playstation 2, there wasn't a viable alternative. The Xbox and
GameCube were still a year away - one was by a company that had never
been in the console business and the other was by the company that
everybody defected away from.
When the Playstation 3 launched, the Xbox 360 had already had a year
of success as a very viable alternative to the Playstation brand and
the Wii, which offered an intriguing new way of gaming, was not very
far behind.
The Wii has taken off and the Xbox 360 is still doing very well. This
time around, the Playstation 3 is not moving very many units. Lack of
interest by consumers makes it riskier for a developer to make a game
for the system, especially with the higher costs of development this
time around. Not as many exclusive games means not as many interested
gamers, and the cycle continues.
2. Sony has a history of massive game libraries. Stop all the moaning
about the weak library. This is only temporarily. A year from now,
Sony's exclusive library will easily rival or beat Xbox. Look at the
PSP. It is a failed handheld, yet now has a huge library.
Again, the Playstation consoles had massive game libraries because
they were able to build massive install bases from the onset.
If you want to talk history, talk about how the PS1 and the PS2 both
had stronger launch titles than the PS3 and both had much stronger
game line-ups at this same point in their lives.
If you want to talk history, Xbox 360 had a horrible launch with games
like Kameo and Perfect Dark totally tanking. This time last year,
there was only like 2 good games for Xbox. Face it, the console has
produced only two system sellers, Gears of Wars. I will be able to
play Gears of War on my PC with extra content, and Halo 3 will
eventually find its way to PC. There is no reason to own a Xbox for
exclusives.
Kameo and Perfect Dark still sold pretty well. Call of Duty 2 sold
exceptionally well. Same with Project Gotham Racing 3. Even a game
like Gun, which shouldn't have sold at all because it was literally
the exact same game as the Xbox version, moved a bit.
The Xbox 360 had one of the better console launches in history with
demand far exceeding supply. On the other hand, retailers couldn't get
rid of Playstation 3 consoles last holiday season, with plenty of
stock available in Best Buy, Target, Wal-mart, etc.
Regarding being able to play these games on your PC... how many
average consumers do you think really have machines powerful enough to
play the games you talk about? Most consumer PCs aren't nearly good
enough to play any games developed for either the 360 or the PS3.
You may be able to play Gears of War on your PC but most console
owners won't.
3. Ring Red of Death, nuff said.
Free replacement Xbox 360, nuff said.
= weeks of not having a console. That would suck around holidays.
Regardless of their
Warranty, it is still a major pain to have to package and mail your
console to them.
True, but you assume everybody will run into this problem. At most,
35% of people have ever had this problem, and that's before the new
systems that are coming out with the new chipsets that eliminate this
issue.
But in case that's not enough... newer chips that should resolve this
problem...
4. Sony is about giving options to players. Microsoft is about
nickeling and diming you for everything. Microsoft also offers a lot
of cheap gimmicks to get your money like a Halo themed console.
Oooooh. Big freaking deal. You can load Linux on a PS3 and open up
all kinds of possibilities including surfing the internet. Basically
you can jack into a PS3 that uses USB.
This is a multi-parter:
a) "Sony is about giving options to players" -- You mean like the
option to NOT have to pay an extra $200 for a Blu-Ray drive? Or how
about the option to NOT play inferior ports of Xbox 360 games?
That's lame. Yes, I have the option to NOT use these features if I
don't want to.
Whether you use your Blu-Ray drive, you paid for it. You had no
choice. If you weren't interested in watching any Blu-Ray movies, you
still dished out $200 for the option to watch them. Regardless of
whether Joe Gamer ever buys a single Blu-Ray disc, he had to pay $200
for the drive to play these discs.
On the other hand, if you bought an Xbox 360 with no intention of ever
buying an HD-DVD, you're not out the $200 for the expansion drive.
The inferior ports have only been the result of lazy developers, not
Sony's fault. Oblivion proved to be quite SUPERIOR on PS3, and Ninja
Gaiden Sigma blew Xbox's version out of the water.
How do you figure the developers were lazy? They had a year to work on
these ports and they were unable to get the same performance out of
the PS3.
Keep in mind that in all likelihood, if left to their own devices,
most developers would have delayed their releases. However, Sony would
have looked pretty pathetic with just Resistance and Motorstorm at
launch so they probably put a LOT of pressure on the developers to
just get something that worked to some extent out the door.
Oblivion is only a little better on the PS3 than on the Xbox 360,
graphically. Even those reviewers that say that it looks better state
that the differences are pretty small and likely not noticeable by
most gamers.
HOWEVER, the load time from the Blu-Ray disc drive is horrendous,
contributing to the Xbox 360 version getting a higher aggregate score
than the PS3 version.
Regarding Ninja Gaiden Sigma...
Are you seriously trying to tout that the version of this game on the
PS3 is better than the version of the game designed for the previous
generation Xbox?
How about trying a valid comparison, like every Xbox 360 port besides
Oblivion, all of which were VERY noticeably inferior on the PS3.
c) "Microsoft also offers a lot of cheap gimmicks to get your money
like a Halo themed console." -- How is offering a dedicated Halo gamer
the option to buy a themed console a reason NOT to buy an Xbox 360
that doesn't have that theme? Your argument's making less and less
Yes, Microsoft gives options, but at a price. Charging a fan $50 -
100 extra for a console that has a different paint job is just
robbery.
a) The Halo-themed console is $50 more simply because Microsoft only
recently dropped the price of the main system by $50.
b) The Halo-themed console includes HDMI and will use the newer
chipsets so you know you won't have to deal with the RROD problem.
c) You don't have to buy the Halo-themed console if you don't want.
You can opt to not pay $50 and just the standard $349 console with no
HDMI and hit-or-miss with the chipset, depending on when you purchase.
The concept of charging more money for theming is not new. When you
buy a jersey for your favorite athlete, you pay more for that than if
you simply bought a plain old vanilla jersey.
When you buy the Eddie Bauer edition of a Ford vehicle, you're paying
a LOT more for not very much more actual value.
I paid more money for my baby's room decor because I wanted
specifically Winnie the Pooh themed things. I could have bought things
that were equally as nice, just with generic bears instead of Winnie
the Pooh, for less money but I wanted the theming, so I paid the extra
money for it.
Disney isn't evil for charging me more for this.
d) "You can load Linux on a PS3 and open up all kinds of possibilities
including surfing the internet." -- Which is great because tons of
video gamers know what Linux even is (shown by the enormous number of
consumer Linux installations) and/or love to surf the Internet using
their television (shown by the tremendous success of WebTV).
Face it, youtube.com and videos are the future of the internet and
most people rather watch videos on tv instead of a tiny computer
window.
ROTFLMAO!!!!
You do realize that the point of YouTube was to create a service with
which people could viably share video files over the Internet, right?
That's why the quality of videos on YouTube sucks and will suck for a
very long time... it's about just getting some form of the video, not
having the best quality.
Now imagine blowing up those horrible looking YouTube videos to a MUCH
larger size on your high-definition television. How good do you think
they would look, then?
People who want to watch video files they've downloaded can hook a
laptop up to their television very easily. Most PCs these days are
Media Center PCs and laptops are very very common now. They don't need
a $600 PS3 to do any of this.
The ability to surf youtube in your recliner is a great
advantage.
Console controllers are horrible compared to a mouse and keyboard.
WebTV used an actual keyboard and look how great that worked out.
I'm sure if gamers would eagerly learn Linux when they
realize that they could come hundreds of video files to the hard
drive. You try that crap with Microsoft, and they void your warranty
asap. Nice guys.
The overwhelming majority of gamers, especially those that bought
those couple hundred million PS2s last generation, are just average
Joes. They're not computer wizards. They're not going to bother
learning Linux no matter what benefits it will gain them.
While more and more people these days are computer savvy from a usage
perspective, only a miniscule percentage of the population could even
install Windows, which only requires that you pop in the disc and
answer a bunch of questions in a nice easy interface.
When was the last time you were in the office and a co-worker said
they wanted to fix their networking issues without calling the IT
guys?
e) "Basically you can jack into a PS3 that uses USB." -- Absolutely
true... but who wants to?
Turning Ps3 into the ultimate media machine is a big advantage.
Again, this would require the user to know how to do this and most
users don't want to be bothered.
5. Free online play. Xbox'rs will claim that Xbox live is really very
cheap, but when you add in all the extra crap you pay for, it gets
expensive. Charging for a skin or new map? That's sad. With the
freedom of PS3, players will eventually be able to upload mods and new
maps. Plus, let's say Xbox 360 lasts another 3 years. That's $150
bucks adding to your console price. Not cheap.
You get what you pay for. Sony's online gaming service is barely
comparable to the first version of Xbox Live that launched with the
original Xbox console.
Have you even tried PS3's online service? They have an easy to use
download management that can queue up downloads and run in the
background. You also get a buddy messaging system, lag free games
even if you are downloading files. Files are easy to locate and
delete, and games like Resistance have all the ranking crap that Xbox
lovers fawn over. Online play is about the gameplay, not the frilly
crap, and games like Warhawk online are among the best online
experience that you can have.
Yes, I have, actually. It's pretty basic. I'm not saying that it
doesn't work, just that it's as vanilla as you can get.
Resistance may have the ranking system but that's solely for the one
game. There's no one uniform experience where you get to see how you
rank compared to other players across all games that you share.
With Xbox Live, I can even see what games someone I meet online has
ever played, whether they have higher scores than me, what
achievements they have versus what I have, etc.
It's called community building and is a major plus of the Xbox Live
service. Home could bring many similar features to PS3 owners but the
biggest problem with it is that you have to use this Second Life-
wannabe interface to do anything.
You may also remember that Sony said that it is up to the individual
publishers to determine whether they will charge for online gaming and
downloadable extras. It's highly unlikely that companies like EA are
going to be nearly as "charitable" as Sony.
Just like they charge for online PC play huh? It won't happen.
Microsoft maintains its own servers for Xbox Live, which is what us
Gold members are paying for. Very few PC games utilize servers
provided and maintained by the companies that created the games...
most players rely on standalone servers whose expensese are shared by
a clan, a dedicated server set up by some charitable chap or for the
host to have his PC do double duty as a server.
The experience would be horrible if gamers were forced to use one of
the players' systems as a server so most of these companies are going
to have their own network of servers if they're not using Sony's...
but they're not going to do that for free.
Regarding your user-created content... this is only possible IF the
game's developers spend the extra time and money to include it into
the game's functionality.
With that logic, PC games would not be modifiable.
It was a good try, Alvin, but pretty much a wash out.
6. PSN keeps getting better - new demos, games and videos are being
added weekly.
Xbox Live Marketplace is getting even better at the same time. New
demos, games and videos have been added weekly for the past 2 years.
How is this a reason to buy a PS3 over an Xbox 360, especially
considering that what Microsoft is putting up on their network is a
LOT better than what Sony is putting up on theirs.
Xbox live had a year's head start. The point is the claim that PSN is
a dead service is completely false.
Who said it was a dead service? It's just not a supreme one right now.
It works, basically.
OUR point was that you can't tout having to pay for Xbox Live is an
advantage when Xbox Live is so much more fully developed than the
Playstation Network.
Again, you get what you pay for. You're right that it's free, but it's
not nearly as good an experience as Xbox Live.
7. Xbox sucks at role playing games. Two Worlds is proof of this.
Sony won with PS3 because of the excellent RPG games. They will do
the same with PS3 starting with Folklore.
That Two Worlds is a crappy game is only proof that the developer
sucks at developing RPGs... or at least RPGs for gaming consoles.
Two Worlds is one of the few RPG titles for Xbox. When you only have
a handful to choose from, a big stinking turd of a game is pretty bad.
PS3 doesn't have any exclusive RPGs right now. Oblivion is slightly
better graphics-wise but has much worse loading times thanks to Blu-
Ray.
The Xbox 360 has several RPGs, 1 of which is stellar by all accounts,
1 which is crappy. It will also have a few exclusive RPGs coming out
in the next few months, which is more than can be said for PS3.
You tout PS3 as being awesome for RPGs and 360 as being crappy for
RPGs, yet 360 has more RPGs, more exclusive RPGs and more good RPGs...
and will have more in the near future. 1 crappy one doesn't make all
of them bad.
Sony's PS2 won the previous generation because of an enormous breadth
and width of game genres and titles, made possible because of the
tremendous success of the PS1, the decent first year of titles and the
lack of any competition that first year.
The enormous success of Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels also
helped a lot. GTA: Vice City was the top selling game for the PS2, San
Andreas was the second best selling game and the original was the 4th
best selling game. Gran Turismo 3 took the 3rd spot and 4 took the 5th
spot. Number 6 is MGS 2.
And Sony will most likely repeat this success. In fact, Rockstar is
producing an exclusive title for the PS3.
How? Right now, you're just making a blind assumption without anything
to support it.
Sony no longer has the same advantages for the PS3 that it did with
the PS2. Many developers that were previously exclusive to Sony have
now opened up to Microsoft and will publish great games for both
titles.
Rockstar is indeed making an exclusive new title for the PS3, but
there's no word on what it is. Who knows what it's going to be. They
made Table Tennis for the Xbox 360, which is a pretty good game but
somewhat limited in mass appeal. It does a good job of showing off the
engine to be used in GTA IV, though.
Sony still has studios like Naughty Dog but the sheer number of
dedicated studio has dwindled. It just doesn't make business sense for
most studios to exclusively develop for Sony's machine because the
install base is SO much smaller.
Just think about it... why would a studio develop exclusively for a
system that doesn't sell as well except for monetary incentives from
Sony? It's the same question people are asking about Paramount and
Dreamworks dropping Blu-Ray.
Kingdom Hearts is the first RPG on the list and it's at number 7. It's
also considered sub-par by many RPG players. Final Fantasy X is only
number 8 on the list and then we got another non-RPG game, MGS 3, at
number 9. Final Fantasy XII rounds out the top 10 best selling PS2
games.
If you add up the total units sold worldwide for all 3 of the RPGs on
the list, they barely
