I have just observed something strange around here.
There are so many quotations of reviews on this newsgroup. It is like few
people had any preferences of their own.
Why do you guys give a shit about someone else's opinion?
The reason critics exist is because people want an opnion before they
drop $60 of their cash on a product. Since the investment in a game is
more than a movie ticket or CD purchase they are even more important.
Of course not all reviewers are going to be unbiased which is why
sites like metacritic.com are so good, because they tell you what
everyone is saying. It's also why if a game has a score in the high
90's it's worth checking out. If it has a very low by most reviewers
you would be foolish to pick it up....
If the reviews are split down the middle then you have to judge for
yourself. Average scores in the mid 80's means it's probably a good
game that has some glitches or issues that are rubbing a lot of
reviewers the wrong way or maybe it's just below the standard for its
genre given what' before before it. By reading the reviews you can
learn if the game is your type or not.
Let's take a "Lair" for example. A game has bad reviews but I wouldn't play
it even if it had best reviews ever. I am just not going to waste my time
flying stupid dragon around no matter how great the game would be made.
I felt the same way about Tonny Hawk: Pro skater for PS2, which is one
of the highest rated games of all itime. Once I tried it I realized
why it was rated so well, if it weren't for the review sites I would
have never touched this fantastic title.
On the other hand "Bioshock" has great reviews. I played the demo and I must
admit that it is one of the most amazing games ever made. So what. I am not
going to buy this game because it freaks the shit out of me. I mean it was
fun to play it with some friends around but when i got alone at night, I had
to turn off the console.
My point is: no matter what reviews are saying I am not going to play any of
the above.
The XBox 360 gives you the ability to download for free and try out so
many games that reviews can matter less, but it's the only platform
where this is the case. PS3 free demos are also free but harder to
come by.because they haven't put very many out.
Why? Because I am human being with build in preferences.
I can recall "Daikatana". It got one of the worst reviews ever. But I loved
the game anyway. And I don't care that some guy who is excited about
"Lumines" claims otherwise.
My question to you is this:
- What was the game that got really bad reviews but you really enjoyed
playing it?
Yes. KISS Psycho Circus on Dreamcast which I enjoyed in spite of it's
flaws. Also the Transformers: The Game (2007 movie tie in) which I
have a love-hate relationship with.
