On my Philips 32in LCD HDTV 1080i looks best for gaming. I tried both
720p and 1080i for Bioshock ,Gears,RSV, Oblivion, etc. Hands down winner
is 1080i . 1080i is a higher resolution than 720p. I've tried sports
channel,Discovery, and everything in between ,and 1080i is the best
picture on my personal HDTV LCD. Try it for yourself to see what looks
better. Some peoples eyes react differently to interlaced signals.
Whatever people say 1080i is NOT 540! Its still 1080 resolution
,otherwise it would be called 540p.
My understand is that 1080i only gets 540 lines from the source per
refresh. The other 540 lines are "drawn in" by the scaler.
So, on one refresh, the TV gets data for the even-numbered lines, and has
to interpolate the odd-numbered lines. Next refresh, the TV gets data for
the odd-numbered lines and now has to interpolate the even-numbered one.
For 1080p, you're always getting all 1080 lines of data from your source.
No interpolation is taking place.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
