I *LOVED* Hexic HD. It was probably my favorite Xbox 360 game for the
first few months of Xbox 360 ownership. I played that game to death
and still turn it on every so often to see what I can do.

I was very excited about Hexic 2 because the screenshots made it look
awesome. I didn't expect the gameplay to change all that much, maybe a
new special piece, but that would be okay because the formula is
solid.

I got the demo and found it interesting enough to purchase after about
a minute of play. My biggest problem with the game didn't sink in
until after I played the full game for a bit.

This problem revolves around the graphics. Sure, the effects are kind
of cool when taken individually. You've got the pulsating/waving
background, you've got the interesting shine effects on the pieces,
etc. Throw everything together, though, and all you see is a confusing
mess when you play the game.

First off, this new "softer" color scheme blows. It's a pain in the
ass to discern between blue and turquoise, turquoise and green, red
and orange, orange and yellow, red and purple, etc. The colors are too
damn close because of the palette.

The borders in the first game were solid black and very thick. They're
much less noticeable in the second game which makes all the colors run
together that much more.

In the original game, I could easily tell at a glance where all the
near-flowers were. In this one, it takes me a bit of time to process
everything because I have to figure out which colors are which.

On top of that, the constantly moving, shifting, pulsing, waving
background acts as a MAJOR distraction out of the corner of your field
of view. Throw in some shine effects that throw off your perception of
the colors and you've got one tough game to play quickly.

On the other hand, the multiplayer competitive modes are pretty
interesting, although the graphical issues still make it harder than
it should be to play.

In any case, I find it hard to recommend the game, even for a measely
$10. If you're a diehard fan of the original and HAVE to play the
latest, sure. If you were just a so-so fan of the original, don't
waste your money... you'll be paying $10 for migraines.

I'm a big Hexic HD fan and I like Hexic 2 just as much. Lot's of nice
gameplay mechanics. I would have loved a "Classic Hexic HD Skin",

Yes! I was hoping that there was some way to change the look to
Hexic's or just get a more contrasting palette.- Hide quoted text -

Oh, they'll have it as a paid downloadable content LOL But I got used
to the default hexes, and I really appreciate the fact that the colors
are far more distinguishable now - the tiles in Hexic.. green and dark
green bombs were too similar, for instance.- Hide quoted text -

I'll agree with the green and dark green in the original... but I
think there are many more color combos like that now.

The blue, green and turquoise are way too similar... the red and
orange are way too similar...

If they charge even $5.00 for a new palette, I'd be really pissed off
LOL. Maybe a buck or two.
