07/14/2007: A class action suit in Florida claims that Xbox 360s can scratch game discs, making them unusable.

If you're dumb enough to move the console while the disk is in and
spinning then yes, you'll scratch it.

It's 100% user error however and Microsoft even documents it in the
manual.

Not entirely true, insofar as there were some launch units with
defective drives that gouged discs. I know someone it happened to,
and he never moved the console while it had a disc in it.

It is true, however, that moving a console while a disc is spinning is
100% stupid user error which will scratch discs.

There seem to be two excuses that people have concocted for this disc-
scratching problem: firstly, that people are moving the 360 with the
disc spinning in the drive (which will obviously cause problems due
mostly to gyroscopic effects); and secondly, that people are moving it
while it's turned off, but when it's switched back on the disc is out
of place and gets scratched.

Neither of these explains how my copy of Forza 2 got scratched (with
perfectly circular scratches) as I've not moved my 360 with it either
on or off since I bought the game.

I've heard that game discs have been recalled in the past due to
slight misbalancing due to poor quality, causing scratches when the
drive spins up.

So, yeah, some people are probably being stupid, but I think there are
cases when it's not user error.

Cheers

Nick
