The other officers in the competition are fine people, but Jon has endured an
extraordinary assault that ended his career and left him blind.
A policeman blinded after being shot in the face could win $10,000 and a trip to
a NASCAR race if enough Internet votes come his way.
Sgt. Jon Brough is a nominee for an episode of Fox network's "America's Most
Wanted" honoring first-responders.
Brough was shot during a standoff in November by 47-year-old Larry Sicka, who
was suspected in the slayings of his former in-laws. The standoff ended when
Sicka killed himself.
People wanting to vote for Brough can do so by visiting the above link.
Visitors may cast one vote per day for the weekly finalists. Voting for the
three remaining finalist slots continues through April 15.
Sergeant Jon Brough has been a member of the Belleville Police Department for 28
years. He is a decorated officer who has been awarded "Certificates of
Commendation" by both the Justice Department and the State of Illinois for work
drug investigations. Sgt. Brough is a devoted family man with two sons. He was
very active in both his department and community before being critically wounded
in the line of duty last November. He was attempting to arrest a suspect in a
double homicide investigation when he was shot in the face by a shotgun and
required six hours of surgery. Brough was left permanently blind with major
damage to both the bone and soft tissue of his face. Sgt. Brough has been a
union leader and D.A.R.E. instructor. He served on the board of his local teen
center and coached both Little League and grade school sports. Sgt. Brough is a
council member of his church and a member of "The Blue Knights" motorcycle club.
Sgt. Brough was named Officer of the Year in 2006 by the Belleville Optimists
Club. The Belleville Police department established The Sgt. Jon Brough Trust
Fund at Commerce Bank in Belleville.
