I agree people cheap-out on buying used games but I disagree they do
it because they just couldn't cough up the extra $5. They save the $5
because they easily can, and used games offer basically the same value
as new games with a small risk that they could be scratched and would
require a return trip to the store for an exchange.

The average consumer can't justify paying even $400 for a new game
console. They're certainly not forking over $600 for one, even if it
can play hi-def movies (which the average consumer doesn't care about
right now).

I agree the "average" consumer can't justify paying $400-$600 for a
console. That's why I started my original reply saying the the
typical 360 and PS3 buyer is likely to be a more above average hard-
core gamer who has less of an issue with price. That's why the price
of the 360 vs the PS3 isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. It's
like somebody pricing a BMW vs a Mercedes. Once you get into that
level of automobile the typical buyer is the type that is less
concerned about price but more concerned with getting the best
technology and performance money can buy. The fact is, the 360 and
PS3 are still niche consoles, and Microsoft has shown by the pricing
of the Elite that its decided to continue to market towards that niche
buyer instead of cutting price to try to get some of the lower-end
console market share now being dominated by the Wii and PS2.
