While I agree with you generally, the argument could be made that
applying this law to a legitimate superior of said officer of the
court would completely undermine the internal structure of the Justice
Department. However, the counter-argument is that pressure applied by
someone outside of the proper hierarchy (say, a political adviser,
local official, or legislator) on behalf of a non-governmental entity
or party at interest in a proceeding (Cunningham, defense contractors,
etc.) is conspiracy to commit that felony. And trying to cover up any
such ties could be seen as obstruction of justice. None of this is
clear cut in the legal sense, although the AG's office's actions seem
pretty lousy from a moral standpoint.

Good point with respect to the AG. But Rove, Miers, Senator Domenici, and
GWB are not in the Justice department, and they are the parties I had in
mind.

But we may never know that actually happend because the President will use
executive privilege to keep most of them them making a public account. And
otherwise smart people like Android will give them a pass on it.
