too bad devs still have to work under the assumption that there might not be
a hard drive present...
Biggest bonehead move MS ever made on the 360, not making the hard
drive standard. It was a rare step BACKWARDS for a console.
Why? The 8 gig hard drive on the XBOX only helped because games were
slow on the old DVD drive to load.
Now they have a faster drive, and can have games autodetect the drive
if neccesary.
Loading data off a hard drive is immensely faster than loading data
off a media drive. There are quite a few games with noticeable
performance issues due to unnecessary (or should it be necessary)
loading.
It doesn't stop you playing the game, though. It's just annoying. The
PS3tard argument is that it is essential, and stops games from being
developed.
The fact that adding a hard drive speeds things up proves that not
being standard isn't a problem.
I would expect in this "next generation" that we wouldn't have to wait
through such significant load times. I don't know about your
definition of "a problem" but reduced performance is a BIG problem for
me.
For you. THus you chose to buy the hard drive edition.
But for many, the speed boost isn't as important. THey just want kewl
graphics and decent games. The hard-drive free 360 can do both just
fine.
Of course you can still play the game... you could play the game with
graphics half as good as they are, too, but you wouldn't want that
reduced experience, would you? Any time you have to wait for stuff to
load off the disc, you're being "taken out of" the experience... with
some games, that happens way too often, although there are some games
that don't have that problem.
Load times are not a problem for a lot of people. It's not as if you
arent physically able to play the game at all without a HDD.
The drive can still stream data well enough due to it's speed, so it
doesnt affect games so much.
I would hope for a more consistent experience, though.
The GAMEPLAY remains the same, the load times reduce. You make your
choice based on your budget at the time.
Name one game that looks worse without a hard drive...
It's not about looking better, it's about performance. The worst
offender by far is Smackdown vs. RAW 2007, where you sometimes have a
loading screen for a loading screen! It's absolutely ridiculous.
Yep, and adding a hard drive does add to the experience. But not
having one doesn't exclude you form playing the game altogether.
Like I said above, Microsoft could have included a graphics processor
of the same level as the Wii's and you'd still be able to play the
game altogether... but it just wouldn't be as good an experience.
You are missing the point. You cant upgrade the Wii graphics processor
- whereas you can give the 360 a hard drive. It's not as if they
havent given you the option altogether.
As much as I favor what Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 over what Sony
has done with the PS3, this is one area where the Sony trolls are
right. You're the first gamer I've conversed with who's said that the
lack of a hard drive across all systems is NOT a problem.
How many non-hardcore gamers that dont want demos, movies and
additional content online do you know?
Probably the 2nd biggest bonehead move was only including a pissy 20
GB hard drive with even the premium version. Here we are months after
they started selling HD movies, and we're still stuck with a drive
that I would have considered too small 5 years ago.
Sure, that's a problem, but hey, look, a 120 gig version is due out
any time soon!
Which people now have to dish out extra cash for regardless of whether
they own the system already.
So are you going to bitch that, because you've filled your PC hard
drive up with games, that it's the manufacturers fault for not
supplying you with a bigger drive?
No, I'm going to bitch that a 20Gb drive was old news years ago, the
technology was super cheap when the 360 was being developed, and that
Microsoft knew and announced beforehand they would have all this stuff
that would use the hard drive... but still chose to provide only a
miniscule drive.
20 gig drive is just fine for the majority of people - if you need
more, fine, they have that option coming soon.
Decisions like what hard drive to include were made years before the
360 came out . Software moves quicker than hardware, so movie
downloads may not have been on the horizon when the 20 gig drive was
specced.
When the 360 launched, there was no video download service.
But they knew they would have one even back when they were designing
the system.
See answer above.
Now there is, you have that option.
Meanwhile, do you need to keep copies of every demo you download,
considering everything on XBOX live is redownloadable as many times as
you want???
Downloading an XBOX Live Arcade game is no problem, but what about
redownloading a 1Gb demo? That's an overnight or all-night download
right there.
Why would you be concerned about downloading a demo again? If you
played a demo, either you love it to peices and buy the game, or hate
it and delete it.
Maybe you accidentally deleted it and the game hasn't come out yet.
If you accidentally deleted it, your the fool - as it asks you if you
really want to delete.
Besides, how many demos do you need on your system?
Or
maybe you didn't like the demo and deleted it but one of your friends
or relatives was interested in trying it out.
Then download it again. How many demos do you want to keep on there
for christs sakes? Most are between 500mb and 1 gig - that's a good
5-10 demos per 20gig disk.
If you delete something, having a bigger hard drive isn't going to
help you get it back, I know, but if you have the bigger hard drive,
you might not be so quick to delete things since you aren't press for
space.
Yeah, and MS are going to give you that otopion. However, it's not
esential and doesn't stop you playing great games.
I recently had some demos I didn't have a chance to try yet but had to
get rid of them because I was going to download an HD rental of Ant
Bully so my nephews and nieces could watch it. If I had a decent-sized
hard drive, that wouldn't have been a problem.
Again, how many demos do you have? Why download them all at once? You
know you will have the same issue on any hard drive if you fill it up
unecesarily.
Sure, it'd be NICE to have more space, but it doesnt prevent you from
downloading again. It IS background downloading, remember.
Furthermore, it's not as if you can't just snap back in the 20 gig
drive. Luckily the 360 has a easy swap system, unlike the PS3.
