lol the dude was stupid in the first place taking a road like that in that
time of year. he rolled the dice and lost. hardly anythings to say hats off
for.

Thing is, if you weren't from Oregon you wouldn't know that that "road"
isn't really a road. I feel bad that he had chance to take much safer
(and much cooler) routes to his destination but was led astray by
Google Maps.

From Portland the most direct route to Gold Beach would be to take the
Sunset Highway (26) to Seaside (about an hour) and then take 101 all
the way South to Gold Beach (about 3 hours). He could have even stopped
and let the kids look at the Sea Lion Caves or something.

Alternatively he could have taken I-5 South to Eugene, then followed
the signs saying "Ocean Beaches" which would have led him to highway
126 and Florence then taken 101 to Gold Beach (shorter because I-5
between Portland and Eugene is straight and 101 from Seaside to
Florence is very curvy.)

What happened was they took I-5 to Roseburg. There is no good way from
Roseburg to the coast. Period. There are two ways, both bad. They
missed both of those and ended up in Grants Pass. From there there is
NO DIRECT ROUTE to the coast. You either go North to Roseburg and take
one of the two bad ways or dip South to California and cut back up.

The logging road he was pointed to is exactly that... a logging road.
