Up until recently I had an XBox, Gamecube, PS2 and a PC for Gaming.
I bought and played an XBox as my main console and was very happy with
that, PGR 2 being one of the best ever games IMHO.
I picked up a Gamecube very cheap of a boot sale simple because it was
£30 for the system and 2 games, one of which Dragons Lair 3 was the
only reason I got it.
The PS2 was a very similar story, a spur of the moment buy, £20 for
the console and another £15 for the associated accessories needed
(memory card, pad & leads)
These were both complete wastes of time, The Gamecube was rarely
played, GFX were good but little sophistication in the game play,
seems to have been designed as a kiddies console and was sold for a
profit recently.
The PS2 was a complete disaster. The graphics are very poor compared
to the XBox and PC, I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 soon after getting the
console and it looked terrible & played poorly even compared the most
average XBox game, I looked up the review and saw this:
>
"The power of Metal Gear Solid 2's graphics engine, combined with the
talent of the artists manipulating that engine, will probably not be
equaled until the same team addresses itself to a project of equal
magnitude. There are a few games that do better with certain effects,
I can pick out games with finer texture work, and certainly there's
stuff out there that pushes more polygons around the screen, but
nothing on the market now, let me stress again nothing, is a finer
total visual package than MGS2, from basic design on up. Emphasis on
"total." No one aspect of the graphics stands out -- at any given
point, you can say "those textures are great," "that animation is
excellent," "good choice of camera angle," "that was a cool effect."
Everything comes together in near-perfection, considering the state of
game graphics today."
If that is the best the PS2 has to offer then I certainly will not be
buying any more games. It got used for a while as a DVD player but
even as that was poor, fiddly unresponsive controls & a total lack of
a useful display.
Now that I am getting a 360 later this week and my chipped XBox with
all the benefits of Media Center is going upstairs on the same TV as
the PS2 I think the PS2's days are certainly numbered, either being
sold or given to my 4 year old son but he will probably have too
higher standards having played a fair bit on my XBox.
