Year in Review:

I went and harvested Gamerankings again (don't worry Blig, I'm not
going to throw any hard math your way this time.)
Overall, what a depressing year for gaming! No wonder sales are down:
Across the 3 home consoles there was a total of 14 90%+ games. 7 of
them on the Xbox, 6 on the PS2 and 1 on the Gamecube. The one Gamecube
title, naturally, was RE 4 so it's not even an exclusive anymore. What
a sad final year for the Gamecube.
At the other end of the scale there were 72 below average titles (below
70%) and 44 craptacular games (below 60%). That's a total of 116
titles. When you consider that there were only 347 games released this
year that's not a great average. 1/3rd of all games this year sucked.
The companies responsible should be ashamed of themselves.
63 of those 116 were PS2 titles (54.31%), 41 were Xbox games (35.34%),
but only 12 were Gamecube games (10.34%). While that doesn't sound so
bad you also have to keep in mind there were only 45 Gamecube games
this year.
On the Handheld front the surprising winner is the Nintendo DS with a
majority of A rated games on the platform (3 out of 5 A rated games
across all handhelds) and thanks to a high number of below average
games released on the PSP (14 of the 19 below average handheld titles
are on the PSP.)
The surprising loser in the Handheld arena is the GBA. Only 17 titles
released in 2005. It's like Nintendo just gave up on the Gamecube and
GBA and decided to focus solely on the Nintendo DS.
The spread*** I used is here so you can see the numbers for yourself.
I created it in Open Office and saved it as an Excel file, but it
should still work.
