And you don't think so?
The only other alternative would be manufacturing problems. But if that
were the case, Microsoft should have known about it much earlier than the
~2 weeks notice they gave retailers when they announced that they were
cutting the primary shipment so much. Even Sony gave their retailers more
notice than that. Although it still angered a lot of people, at least
stores were able to better set expectations about how many units would be
going for pre-orders and such. With the 360, many people got called days
before the launch and were told that they were no longer getting the 360
they paid for almost 6 months ago. I understand that problems will arise
with the launching of any product, but surely Microsoft couldn't have been
THIS ignorant about any problem that would have resulted in them only
having ~30% of their expected first shipment ready.

If Microsoft had fulfilled all their pre-orders, then I would agree with
you. However, stores already had run out of pre-orders MONTHS ago - and
there were still people upset that they didn't have a pre-order. Did
Microsoft think there wasn't enough demand for the 360 that they CUT
pre-orders by so much? Again, I would fully understand if Microsoft
managed to ship all the units that had been sold through the pre-order
programs and then was "surprised" that there were still large numbers of
people wanting a 360. But considering that not many of the pre-order folk
even got their system, there is nothing to be "surprised" about here.

So far, all signs point to both.
A: Microsoft didn't handle this launch very well.
B: Microsoft SEVERELY underestimated the interest in the 360 - despite the
data avilable to them via vendors like EBGames.
B may be the sort of problem every company would love to have, but A is
just inexcusable.

Really? I can remember there being Dreamcasts on the shelf on and after
their initial launch day. I also remember there being no problem getting
an Xbox either when it launched.
