Castlevania: Curse of Darkness Demo (OXM 51)

Got this yesterday and played some when I got home.

The games plays fairly well and wasn't overly hard, HOWEVER,

I got to the room where you hit the switch to make the stairs come up out
of the ground and I can not get more than a third of the way up before they
go back down.

If I hit the switch while facing the stairs, I get caught on the switch (I
can't run because the switch is in the way - by the time I run around it,
the stairs are on their way down).

If I stand on one side or the other, I can only get a quarter of the way
up.

If I have my back to the stairs, that is when I get the highest up.

Did I miss an artifact or something I need?

Ia I just stupid (don't answer that, it is retorical)?

On a side note, I can not get the Pac-Man World 3 demo to boot. Anyone else
care to admit that?
.
