Re: Long time no MAME - and apparently I'm way out of touch. Help?

Wanted to get back into MAME - thinking of using my netbook as the
brains for a space-saving MAME machine in place of the hulking arcade
beasts I have now...

But I downloaded version 0.136 and none of the ROMs I found apparently
work; they're missing files and this and that. (just to see what's
what, I DLed a couple classics for me and a couple Neo Geo games for
my girlfriend. And yes, I got the neo BIOS rom; I remembered that
much at least).

Are you sure you have a full rom set, and not just a few updated roms?
Some games need two (or more?) roms to work.

If you have a full set of the newest roms, and the newest version of
MAME, it should work.

There is always clrmame to check out.

At any rate, some people were saying maybe an older MAME will run
older ROM dumps, so I got a few versions, 0.100, .122 and 0.128. Each
seems to play a couple of my test games but not all.

SO, all that said, is there a way for me to get a good version of MAME
for my PC (1.67 gHz Atom, 1GB RAM), and to then get the ROMs that are
definitely good for that version? I plan to use Maximus as the
frontend, so I don't think it matters if I use commandline mame or
mame32 - I just assumed the commandline version uses less resources.

Note: I've seen torrenting mentioned on this board. Unfortunately -
maybe I'm just a grumpy old fart at the ripe old age of 32 - but I
don't have the foggiest idea how to torrent anything.

32 you call old? I'm 43 here.

You need a torrent client. If you have the Opera browser by chance that
comes with a built in torrent client. It works like a download there. You
click a *.torrent and the first time get asked where to save torrents and
other stuff. That's it. You shall get a notification when it's
complete. But, and that's the purpose of torrents, still let it run for
some more time, so that others can also participate. It's called seeding
when you have the download complete but still offer others to get from you.
