If you can use your regular mouse in the game but not the trackball,
try this from the X-arcade website.

6.  Trackball: If you have another mouse/touchpad connected to the PC,
you may need to make the X-Arcade™ Trackball the default mouse. The
easiest way to do this is to disable the other mouse/touchpad in
Device Manager (The X-Arcade™ Trackball shows up as "Samsung" mouse),
then re-enable it. If you have a USB mouse, you can simply unplug it,
reboot, and then plug it back in again. Otherwise you will need to
change all of the default mouse buttons and movements to the X-Arcade™
Trackball manually.

Here is what they say to enable using a mouse....

4.  In MAME™, open Options (at the top), then "Default Game Options",
select the "Game Controllers" tab; and set your "Default input layout"
to "X-Arcade"™ from the drop-down list.
***(on this same tab, click the box to "Enable Mouse Support" for
trackball use).***

Thanks to you and Philip for the help. It's now working!  Is there a
good site with a list of MAME controller settings for different games?
I'm now trying Lost Tomb and am stuck. It should be like Robotron: one
joystick controls movement and the other "fires."  I know the default on
the TankStick is for the left joystick (in numlock mode) to be keypad
2,4,6,8 and for the right one to be f,d,r,g, but those don't do anything
in the game.

Thanks again,

  David

David, you just hit "tab" and map it to each game.  It's standard and
built into every version of MAME.  Don't worry about what mode or
anything.

Input (This game) is your friend....

Thanks Jon.

I thought that's how to do it, but the PC I was using acts really weird
and won't do anything when I hit enter after selecting the mapping!  On
my other PCs it works fine.  Very strange.

Anyway, now that that works, I'm left with having to modify my
TankStick. Why didn't they use joysticks with fire/trigger buttons?????
One of the main reasons I bought this thing was for multi-joystick
games, but it sucks.  If I'm playing Battlezone, I have to keep moving
my hand off one of the joysticks to fire.  If I'm playing Tron, it's the
same: one hand is on a joystick and the other is on the trackball. What
were they thinking?

Has anyone modded the joysticks to add trigger buttons tied in parallel
with a couple of the other buttons?

  David

That would be sweet, but you never see it.

There are only 2 styles out there I've seen that aren't full sized
like Tron/flight sticks..  The slim kind that "crane" games use which
have the little button on the very top.  And, the original Tron
cocktail joysticks that come up every now and then.  I personally have
plans to hack a trigger flight stick onto a regular joystick shaft.  I
finally garage saled myself a stick that has a big enough base that I
think I can make a slip over to a happ ultimate sized shaft, and run
the button cable through a "port".

But even then, Tron used a modified 8 way that was closer to a 4 way
to play both types of games on the same console.  And, I don't have a
top switchable at the moment.

Thanks for the info.  I actually found this site yesterday:http://mamecheats.fateback.com/tutorial.htm.  Turns out I had one of the
Raider Pro joysticks sitting around collecting dust. A trip to the
hardware store later, a bit of hack-sawing, one hole drilled, and a
couple of wires soldered, I now have a joystick with of trigger on my
TankStick!

It's not quite as nice as one of the Happ models
(http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50997000.htm), but it only cost
me a few dollars.  Makes Tron and Battlezone much nicer! It's probably
almost as solid as the real Tron joystick: I can't remember how many of
those I saw broken in arcades back in the mid '80s!

  David

Yup, that's the style hack I'm talking about, only I want mine to not
be permanent.  i.e. I want to be able to slip it on/off based on the
game, so I don't have to have a flight stick on my CP all the time.

Yeah - I would have liked something that slipped on, but it's really
not a problem. If I leave the cover off the bottom of the TankStick, I
can swap between the original handle and the trigger handle in about
30 seconds!
