I did find something interesting though. After I d/led it, I kept
getting error messages. I tried different things, but nothing was
working. I was going to attempt it again so I could post what the
error msg said, but got a different msg, one I haqve never seen
before, came iup. It said

Cheat: [cheat entry] memory allocation error
length = 0000000F
new_length = 00000010
cheat_list = 00000000

I have cheats turned on by default. So I tried "mame ecofghtu -
nocheat" and it worked. WHat does this error mean? Do I need a new
cheat file?

It looks like the cheat file you have hits bogus addresses in the new ROM,
either a new cheat file or remove entries for that rom, or try to update
them yourself.
