It's dead. Well usenet is dying. Must be an interesting experience for
you to have read here and when coming back, you just see the rests.

With ISPs now dumping usenet for a variety of reasons, I wonder how long it
will be before other things like IRC will be going away?

In case the internet as we know it becomes fully commercialized (only WWW
left, tons of banners and ads, if you dare using an ad proxy you'll be
banned and sued) there is still the _internet_.

I mean the internet is just an infrastructure (TCP/IP or UDP protocol and
others) you run WWW, NNTP (usenet) or what ever on it.

As long as I can get access I can run and IRC or NNTP server or what ever
I like and grant access to others, without "the old internet".

Hack, if everything else fails we do a plain old telephone service (POTS)
conference via dial-up modem to chat and exchange information. :-)

Commercialism won't take the internet away from us old-school farts. It
might become some what more difficult to access it though.
