In my opinion those virus scanner which always scan make no sense,
besides eating up CPU cycles anyway.

As even if you manually scan files very new viruses are not reliable
detected anyway.

According to <http://www.virustotal.com/> and my tests 35%-47% of scan
engines there find fairly new viruses, the rest fail (performing better
when the virus is a day old or two).

You have to be pretty careless to catch a virus. Warez, unknown programs from dodgy sites and keygens are the usual culprits. You could get an on demand virus scanner, or use one that doesnt slow the system down, like AVG, which co-incidentally has a new version 8 out and is very good.

I would recommend a program called crap cleaner, www.ccleaner.com, its free and you can use it to disable useless startup entries (like update schedulers office/utility pre-loaders).

If you then download autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
you can disable useless/unneeded services (and remove all errors too).

Both these utilities work with xp and fista (from crap edition right the way up to the overpriced edition).

Let me ask you guys something. My wife has a laptop that the kids screw around with a lot. It has firefox with adblock plus, avg, and we run spybot every couple of days. We keep getting IE popups. IE is supposedly blocked via the "set programs and access" but keeps popping up. It must be some trojan. I have removed it before by running the virus scanner in safe mode, but it returns a couple of days later. What can I try next?
