I just bought a fast gateway PC, 1.8 ghz. Unfortunately, it has
onboard crap like audio and video. The video can be disable in the
CMOS. I'm assuming that a soundcard will work if I put one in and
install the drivers.

Please recommend a sound card that is cheap and will work with Windows
98. Would be good if it can work in Linux also. My old computer is
using an old soundblaster ISA card. Would be nice if I could put one
into this new machine, but there's no ISA slots in this machine!
There's no AGP slot either. The onboard garbage is AGP, but there's no
slot for me to put in an any type of AGP card.

This new machine probably won't be perfect, but it's 5 times faster
than my current machine. I will use it for games that need speed and
for running linux. Just gotta work around the onboard garbage.

As has been said many times before mame doesn't use hardware
acceleration for graphics or sound or anything else for that matter.
It's better to say what else your pc will be used for i.e. what games
and what other emulators, and what apps on linux. For mame though the
graphics card makes practically no difference as long as it can put a
picture on the screen.

That was something that I forgot to mention. My old computer is hooked
up to my television through the ATI card. If I can't find a cheap PCI
video card that has AV or S-Video output, I won't be able to hook up
this new one to a television. I'd like to eventually get rid of my old
computer, but that can't happen until this new one is in game shape.
It has to be able to do everything the original one was doing.
