Use Xnews. Its a free news reader and easy to use.

As for paying for a server, don't you already pay an internet service
provider? My service provider gives me newsgroup access. You just need
their news server account name which is similar to their smtp server
name (usually something like: smtp.provider-name.net and
news.provider-name.net)

You lucked out and found what you needed, but having the ability to grab
what you need off the Usenet will be much more successful.

I agree. Newsgroups haave been around like forever. Maybe even the
80's
