My hard drive isn't real huge so I don't have enough room to unzip my

slow down caused by having the executable on one drive and the files
on another?
As long as the second drive is on a fast interface (PATA, SATA, even USB 2.0/Firewire), then you'll never know. In fact... you could theoretically get a tiny speed up. I have ROMs on a server so that my kids computers and mine can access them in one place, rather than have three copies of them.
Also how do you copy a complete hard drive (which also has windows o/s
files on it) to put it on a new larger hard drive? Do I need a
software program for this? I don't have a XP disc to reinstall if
something goes wrong and I lose my operating system in the process.
Many retail drives include software to migrate your data - for instance Maxtor drives come with MaxBlast which has options to do this. However, Maxtor drives suck and you will, eventually, have to replace it, likely in a disaster situation. Ask me how I know - hint, I had to emergency migrate last weekend.
Ghost is hit or miss anymore. Acronis TrueImage works okay, there are even free programs out there that supposedly clone drives.
