Kxmame and high scores

I thought after years with typing at the console to run games I go with a
front end and installed kxmame.
So far nice, but I can not find an option to tell it where my high scores
are. As in other front ends there is no option to set a high score
directory. I read the docs and stuff but no help.
My high scores are not in ~.xmame/hi (kxmame creates new *.hi files there
I noticed), furthermore I put them to /usr/games/mame/hi to have them
globally available in case some other user wants to compete from his
account on my machine.
Before I just link ~.xmame/hi to /usr/games/mame/hi and risk that kxmame
deletes them (no great loss as I suck at most games anyway ;-) I wonder
if somebody knows how to tell kxmame to use /usr/games/mame/hi instead
(and risk to delete them anyway ;-).
Of course I will make a backup before.
