MAME related Datfiles are available at clrmame.com. You scan them exactly the same way as you scan your roms. Load a datfile, setup rompaths, scan. In this case rompaths point to your folders with your images. Don't forget the 2 supported scan modes and the proper way of setting up rompaths:

rompath\setname\file 1 .... file n for unzipped sets
rompath\setname.zip for zipped sets.

In other words, look at the datfile, see what setname is used and check if you selected the correct rompath.
