Check out the Great Outdoors Smokers at Walmart <cringe>. OK I said

I think that you are spot on with that recommendation, Steve, at the price
range Janet is looking at.

I bought one of these from Walmart and ended up taking it back. It's a gas
smoker. I never could get the temp. low enough to smoke, even after
replacing the burner unit. If you search about on the internet, this
complaint rises here and there. I think people that like that product are
baking rather than barbecuing for the most part. I don't think gas is very
suitable for smoking, at least at the backyard level.

Maybe not with those particular units--I've not got one--but I do just
fine with my Masterbuilt 7-in-1 Smoker/grill.
This one:

Or almost that one--mine, which I bought at Lowe's almost 4 years ago,
doesn't have the aluminum pot and basket. But since I didn't want
them then and don't want them now, I feel no problem.

I do a pretty good job smoking ribs and butts, and when I take out the
center section and water (now sand) pan, it's a nice little charcoal
grill. Since I only cook for me, or me and my lady, it'll handle all
I need. Well, except if I wanna do a packer-cut brisket, I'm best
cutting the flat and point apart to put one on each grid. Not *quite*
big enough for one of those.

'Course, when it comes to charcoal, I know--without reading any more
of the thread--what I'll see. WSM. And one day I'll likely get me
one of them.
