Judging is a lot of fun. If you love BBQ, enjoy being around cookoffs and
hanging out with fellow foodies, it is a good time. While you have a point
about expense, no BBQ society I am aware of REQUIRES you to go to any great
lengths to judge.
You do have a point about the one day classes. IMHO, they're a joke, but
may be a necessary evil. I prefer the "good old days" when judges were
drawn from a pol of restauranteurs, food critics, caterers, BBQ chefs, and
other recognized foodies. But I suppose critics of the old system had a
point when they suggested standardization would be a good thing.
If you get a chance to judge contests that have on site judging, jump at
it. I've judged blind, and I've done on site judging, and there's nothing
like getting the full tour of the chef's technique, hearing his spiel,
being catered to like a VIP and getting the meat literally seconds from the
grill. Beats sitting in a tent and eating out of a styrofoam box by a mile!
