What this all means is that Macy's has decided to jettison DECADES of
brand-awareness and goodwill. In FL they threw Burdine's out the
window, in Chicago it was Marshall Field's, and in Boston they did
Filene's in, etc., etc.
You get the idea.
This--and mark my words--will come back and bite them in the
ass...hard. They seem not to have learned the first rule of branding &
marketing: not to piss off your core clientele.
Just you watch,

Sigh. Here in New England, it's Filene's that have been gobbled up by
Macy's. We'll miss them. The local store converted their signs this
week, and the downtown store is having some kind of big hoopla this
weekend. I must say, they're being more sensitive with this transition
than they were when Macy's gobbled up the venerable old chain Jordan
Marsh--this transition has taken a lot longer, with more gradual
changeovers and more clear attempts to win over customers. Today's
business page had an interview with the chairman of Macy's East
division. Here are some excerpts:
I was so devastated by the Jordan Marsh closure. I was into the history
of the store because when I was a kid, my father (who loves to shop too
:) bought a book on the history of Jordan Marsh. There was a red ribbon
in the book because at the very beginning, Jordan Marsh was a small
store that sold mostly sewing supplies, IIRC, and the red ribbon was
original ribbon from eons ago. My mother loved the blueberry muffins, of
course. I loved Filene's too. OTOH, the newer Filenes and Jordan Marsh
stores paled in comparison to the originals at Downtown Crossing, much
like most Macy's stores are jokes in comparison to the store on 34th St.
Same for Bloomies.
That seems to be the case for chains, in general. I've lived in both
Philly and Ann Arbor and frequented the original Borders book stores,
which were nice and had a cozy feel with creaky wood floors and a cafe
(which wasn't Starbuck's) that had a homier feel. Now they're all glass
and chrome. The old Barnes and Noble stores I went to as a kid in NY and
Boston were large but still had character. The new ones are just too
"sterile".
I'm curious to know whether the Macy's replacing Filene's at Downtown
Crossing will be similar in feel to the one in NY? It can't be as big
since the building isn't nearly large enough but if they didn't gut the
building, I hope it at least keeps some of the character of the old
Filene's and Macy's! That would be some consolation, IMO.
