LBJ DECLARED WAR ON POVERTY TODAY IN 1964: Up about 6:00. Popped the
Synthroid, read a bit, had breakfast. Then, wrote my weekly Farm
letter. Out for tortilla soup and beef fajitas. For the day so far:
White T-shirt
Bright blue shorts (it's 75 outside!)
[when out]
Nike Air Deschütz sport sandals (black/blue/yellow)

Perhaps he declared war on poverty but 41 years later there is still extreme poverty in many parts of the United States. I heard LBJ in person when I was in college; he may have been my commencement speaker or else it was some othere important university event. Anyway, I just finished a proposal to fund a new program for clothing Hmong refugee children in our county and learned that we are the first or second poorest county in the state, one of the largest poverty pockets in the United States and in many ways similar to Appalachia. So much for the war on poverty.

The fog lingered this morning and it is still gray outside. I am wearing Land's End periwinkle sweats, white socks and gray bedroom slippers. The girls go back to school today and I will change to jeans, heavy sweatshirt and some sort of garden clogs or boots in the afternoon. I love no makeup casual Sundays.
