They need everything. There are workers from all over the country
in MS and LA trying to restore power (the ones on my street were
from Indiana) (and have yet to restore the power, I'm at a friend's
house), but there are many many people who have only the clothes
on their backs, including most of the law enforcement people in the
lower halves of MS and LA, and also other people--I mean people
like you all and me: the daughter and son-in-law of someone in
my husband's office, who were before this storm, successful young
people in New Orleans, have only the clothes on their backs. (If
any woman wears a 6/8 and has clothes she wants to get rid of,
email me and I'll get back to you as soon as I have power and phones.)
As for people obeying the mandatory evacuation it's hard to do
if you have no car, no money, and none of the million advantages
most of us take for granted.
I am much more angry at the federal government than I am at some
desperate kid walking around with a plasma TV. Why should he
care? It's very clear we don't care about him and by "we" I don't
mean me or you, but this country as a whole.
Sorry for the rant.
Obfashion: without power I have taken to wearing ancient Gap
khakis, which are very thin and cool from wear, and JJill
pool-colored cotton tee shirts since the color makes me feel
cooler.
