Checked the faq, didn't see this:
In Ep4, at the end of the trench run, Vader has Luke in his sights,
and has in fact pressed the trigger, when at the same moment, Han
blasts in and knocks Vader's wingman out, as we all know, [sorry no
spoiler here I hope!], and essentially saves the entire Rebellion
single-handedly.
Nobody, [except the few post-modernists in the audience in '77]
foresees this, from the Emperor on down. Discuss.
First off, Han didn't save the entire Rebellion. He did help win a
significant battle by allowing Luke to make the tight shot to destroy
the Death Star. Yes, it was a blow to the Empire (no pun, please) but
by no means did it "save" the Rebellion. Vader still lived and the
Emperor still had control. I think the reason Palpatine didn't see
that battle as victorious for the Rebels can be summed up with
Tarkin's reaction to the suggestion they evacuate. The Empire and
Palpatine did not see the Rebels as a serious threat. As Luke says in
ROTJ, their overconfidence was their weakness. They could not believe
that one small X-wing could destroy the massive Death Star. And they
never imagined a lowly smuggler would even think of helping the Rebels
cause.
Yoda: Always in motion the future is.
Nobody can predict the future. Even in RotJ the Emperor is telling luke
that his friends "will" fail and "will" be captured and killed ... and
that obviously doesn't happen.
