This Dave in History - May 17



1982: Dave throws a pencil to the backdrop to the sound of the "Jaws"
theme. Suddenly, a giant pencil appears and tries to poke Dave in the
face. Guest Ed Asner, referring to the giant pencil, later tells Dave,
"I've seen a lot of those things; I worked with Ted Knight."

1983: During the Opening Remarks, Dave mentions that a staffer came to
work dressed as a cowgirl and asks if she'll come out from backstage.
Viewers hear a faint but insistent "NO!" from Barbara Gaines.

1984: At the end of the show, Dave mentions the death today of Andy
Kaufman: "He certainly was unique, and we're going to miss him."

1989: Tired of having Dave invade its set across the hall from 6A,
Live-at-Five beefs up its security. So Dave fires his confetti cannon
at the outside Live-at-Five doors, further endearing himself to his
neighbors.

1990: Top Ten Ways Quayle is Preparing for the Summit - 10. Making
sign that reads "Gorbachev" to hold when he picks him up at airport.

1990: Top Ten Ways Quayle is Preparing for the Summit - 8. Looking at
hundreds of photos of guys with red spots on their heads until he no
longer giggles.

1991: Top Ten Least Popular L. L. Bean Catalog Items - 2. Goose down
condoms.

1991: Remote: Dave takes staffer Mary ("Connie Plescoe") Connelly to
Yankee Stadium to fine-tune her pitching with Yankee Coach Mark Conner
and Manager Stump Merrill. Making its debut in the English lexicon is
the phrase "Show Stump your heater."

1994: Dave asks folks waiting outside the Sullivan Theater to spell
out the word "Hi."

1995: Day 3 in London: London Souvenirs include a Prince Charles
Ketchup Dispenser, a Bobby Helmet Bra, and a Tea Cannon, brought out
by "London guards." Also, Peter O'Toole enters riding a camel, and Van
Morrison barely remembers the words to his own song, "Have I Told You
Lately" in a performance with Sinead O'Connor and the Chieftains.

1995: Top Ten Rejected Pub Names - 7. The Lactose-Intolerant Monkey.

1996: Top Ten Manny's Number Ratings - 10. Dank, 9. Dank, 8. Dank, 7.

1996: During the Opening Remarks, Dave yells at Tony Mendez, so Tony
leaves the theater and grabs a cab, leaving Dave without cue cards.
Later, while Helen Hunt looks on, Dr. Marshall, a dentist, checks
Dave's whistling problem as Dave operates a Mouth-Cam, grossing out
America.
