In November of 99, Timko and I had gone to see Conan in Burbank when
he took LN on the road for the first time. I seem to recall that the
show was taped in Studio 3, which I believe was a twin to (Johnny's)
Studio 1. I believe Johnny's curtain was used. Schimmel was the last
guest. After a joke which seemed sure to attract the attention of
Standards & Practices, we could see Andy turn to Conan - laughing, but
quizzical. Then both Andy and Conan simultaneously turned to producer
Jeff Ross. The unspoken question was "Can we even air this?" (It
made air.) I'll remember Schimmel for his honesty and the way he
pushed the envelope.
I hadn't seen that show, but Robert talked about it in his act (the
dentist/"prick in your mouth" joke)
