The Times had an article today called "As Facebook Users Die, Ghosts Reach
Out" (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/18/technology/18death.html?th&emc=th).
I'm not a big FB person, but I went there today after reading the article
just to check out what was new. I'm friends with a couple of folks in this
group, and there, among others, as a newly recommended friend was Laura
Ryan, whose profile is still up and running.
The article ends with:
These are issues that Facebook no doubt wishes it could avoid entirely. But
death, of course, is unavoidable, and so Facebook must find a way to
integrate it into the social experience online.
"They don't want to be the bearer of bad tidings, but yet they are the
keeper of those living memories," Mr. Katz, the Rutgers professor, said.
"That's a real downer for a company that wants to be known for social
connections and good news."
Thanks for the article. Yeah, a little creepy, but so far I think
having Laura's Facebook page active helps keep her memory alive. Folks
wishing her a happy birthday last week was a wonderful touch.
