Forgive me, James, but I didn't quite understand your question. Did
who appear on whose show when?
The time I wondered about started from when Leno became the steady
guest host of Tonight during Carson's tenure. During that time, how
much did Carson appear when Leno was guest hosting, and when (if ever)
did Leno appear as a guest when Carson was behind the desk? Gary cited
some instances in this thread.

I got it now. I don't think Johnny EVER appeared on Leno when the
latter was the Tonight show's host. He had Jay on a few times (I
didn't keep an actual count, but it wasn't a lot,) and then stopped
inviting him on. Dave, who then had LATE NIGHT, saved face for Leno by
having him on regularly. Once Johnny saw that Leno had some redeeming
comic value, he brought him back to appear on the Tonight Show. Dave,
in effect, saved Jay's evening career. Leno cntinued to appear on
Johnny's show, and we all know what THAT led to...a steady campaign
waged by Leno to succeed Carson as the host by visiting affiliate
stations all across the country.
Johnny appeared on Dave's LATE NIGHT show a few times for short bits
and contributed jokes. He also advised Dave to walk when NBC offered
the Tonight show to Leno, and Dave followed his advice. Johnny's
decision not to do specials or appearances, in general, was, I
believe, because he was generally disgusted and insulted by the
treatment he'd received at NBC's cavalier treatment of him at the end
of a fantastic career, and he was expressing his disdain by staying
off the air. His judgment of Leno turned out to be on target, but Dave
had Jay on because he was grateful to him for what he'd learned from
Leno at The Comedy Store about comic delivery and a way of looking at
things that worked for him. His loyalty was not reciprocated. To Jay,
sentiment is an abstract concept having nothing to do with success. To
crush an opponent is more up his alley. Maybe he was frightened by a
Salvation Army worker in his early years.
I feel sorry for Helen
Kushnick, who died, possibly a casualty of Jay's machinations. He
blamed her for things he may have done, and then fired her.

And Dave killed Larry Bud and a host of others. (Who was that
Uncle.....somebody? That great old curmudgeon who eventually got too
much on Dave's nerves and Dave banned him and therfore .......murdered
him!)
