Lots of inside detail -- the Sonny & Cher reunion, the Chevy Chase
I haven't had a chance to read Paul's book yet. I just started Craig
Ferguson's the other day. Regarding the Chevy Chase roast, however, Marc
Maron does a podcast and in his first show he talked to Jeff Ross about
roasts, and that one in particular. Maron talked about how horrible of
an experience it was for him at the roast. Ross, who wasn't there,
blamed the producer for putting it together badly. Ross said it's an
important part of a roast for the producer to make sure the guest of
honor meets each comic one-on-one for a few minutes to build a sense of
camaraderie and for the comic to give the guest of honor a sense of the
material. That gives the comics confidence and keeps things from getting
nasty. Maron said the producer didn't bother to do anything like that.
There was an article about the Chevy Chase roast
in an old issue of "Premiere", as told from Chevy's point of view.
He said it was devastating because none of his good friends
were there, just strange comedians making jokes at his expense.
He also said that Paul was there afterwards to try and console him.
Chevy Chase has "good friends"?...r
