The first commercial break was something the advertisers demanded. For years
both late nights shows (the LS and TS) put the bulk of their commercial time in
the second half of the show. Advertisers' research showed them that most people
watched at the beginning of the show and when they tuned out at the long
commercial break they did not come back to watch the show (let alone the ads).
So they pushed for more ads earlier in the show and the current format is the
result.
