As much as I'd like to support hydro, I dunno. When I was with
Greenpeace, I remember lots of reports on environmental destruction in
creating the dams. The land that was destroyed/flooded for the water
reservoir. The displacement of (usually) indigenous peoples of the area.
But still, better than drilling oil or coal.
I have never figured out why "they" (whomever they are) do not harness
the potential hydro-power from the locks and dams on the Mississippi
River. They have at least 26 dams between St Louis and Minneapolis
with water rushing through the dam gates 24/7. Why not throw some
power-generating turbines in there? You would not have to dam new
rivers that way. Is it just because the dams/locks are run by the
Corps of Engineers and they aren't power intities? There also are
several large dams on the Missouri River from Yankton upstream.
Enquiring minds want to know!
