Having never been led astray in the past, I thought I'd ask
y'all for some non-fiction recommendations.
Best non-fiction I've read recently was:
"Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer"
by Andrew Ritchie. Even if you have no interest in bike racing,
it's a fascinating read. Long before Jackie Robinson, Major Taylor
was, in the face of sometimes violent opposition, breaking barriers.
So... any suggestions?
If you enjoy reading about amazing survival experiences, then try one
of these:
Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival
Joe Simpson
"Shortly after summitting a previously unclimbed 21,000 foot peak in
the Peruvean Andes with his climbing partner Simon Yates, Joe Simpson
fell and broke his leg. Such an event is almost universally regarded
by mountaineers as a death sentence. "Touching The Void" is Simpson's
stirring account of how he survived. (Anonymous review on Goodreads)
Or,
Young Men and Fire
by Norman Maclean
Gripping story of the smoke jumpers who perished during the Mann Gulch
fire in August 1949. Maclean, who also wrote "A River Runs Through
It," reconstructs the wildfire, tells the back stories of the jumpers
themselves, details the science of forest fires and follows the
investigation to learn the cause of the tragedy. Amazing story... it's
not just about fire.
Or, if you like to read books that are hilariously funny, historical,
and interesting at the same time, try "The Year of Living Biblically:
One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible As Literally As Possible"
by A.J. Jacobs. You don't have to be Jewish or know anything at all
about the Bible to find this book laugh-out-loud funny.
For edgier humor, read absolutely anything by David Sedaris. You've
heard him read a page or two when he's been a guest on The Late Show,
but if you haven't read "Me Talk Pretty One Day" or "Dress Your Family
in Corduroy and Denim," you haven't yet experienced the complete
Sedaris.
Also:
"Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the
Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10" by Marcus Luttrell
"The Devil and the White City" by Erik Larson
"Shadow Divers" by Robert Kurson
Kate
I haven't actually read this yet, but "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" (listed
as being by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen) looks promising....r
