The poll is the result of 59 people's opinions on the Late Show,
and if she doesn't think it means anything, I really don't care.

I don't believe Helen tried to invalidate your poll. She validated it
in a certain way. I don't remember Helen saying she doesn't think it
means anything. But she has explained why she thinks it has limited
meaning.

What I find interesting is the phrase "scientific mumbo jumbo" and its
implied dismissiveness of careful and methodical truth-seeking. The
juxtaposition of "scientific," with its bundled associations to
sobriety, analysis, and testing, with "mumbo jumbo," which connotes
not just nonsense but occultism, is a striking reversal of rational
thinking -- though admittedly not an unusual one in today's American
lay intellectual climate. It is certainly this insult to the very
concept of science that has delivered so much denial from the current
presidency about medical and environmental issues. It might not be too
much to say that some conservatism is primarily defined by the
assignment of bedrock reality to subjective religious and moral
conceptions, and the denial of reality to secular objectivity and non-
assumptive knowledge.

This is heavy rhetoric for a casual poll. But you're not really
talking about the poll anymore; you're talking about the value of
Helen's thinking and knowledge. I urge you to consider what you are
contributing to, what you are helping build up and tear down, when you
use the phrase "scientific mumbo jumbo." In my opinion that phrase
should never be uttered.
