Did you mean the least *populous* state? Because it's not. The 2000
census ranks Alaska 48th by population (626,932). Vermont is 49th (pop.
608,827), the District of Columbia (not a state, but whatever) is 50th
(pop. 572,059), and Wyoming is 51st (pop. 493,782). I also looked at
some projections for 2005 and 2010, and nowhere does Alaska come in last
by population.
I stand (or sit) corrected. Turns out Alaska's population is one-
quarter that of Brooklyn's.
Reminds me of last night's "360" on CNN, when James Carville marvelled
at McCain announcing a VP pick after having met his choice just once
last February. "Twice," Anderson Cooper corrected him. Carville
acknowledged his error and laughed.
Of course, Alaska will rank last by average population *density*. [Odd
that I cannot find a population-by-density table on the Census Bureau
website.]
