Simplistic, politically-uneducated Canadian take on this: (initial
thought) McCain is throwing in the towel and doesn't want to waste a
good candidate for the next election as his running mate, (second
thought) maybe they think she'll appeal to those who would have voted
for Hillary, (third thought) who talked him into this?
(these are my views only and do not reflect those of Canadians or dumb
guys in general)

My first thought was "HUH??!?!?" Then I looked up her bio, and I think
she's
someone the voters will really respond to. She IS middle America.

Until they stop and wonder what in the hell McCain was thinking.

It makes a complete mockery of McCain's pledge to select a Vice
President who'll be "ready on Day One."

...much like the guy at the top of the other party;s ticket.

Here's the difference: Obama has proven his electoral worth by going
through an exhaustive primary, where millions of voters had the
opportunity to vote for or against him. He prevailed. Palin? A mayor
in a town of 8,500 and a governor of the least-populist state in the
nation. The contrasts are blaring.

I'm tellin' ya, the rank and file, the person on the street, the undecided
voters are going to like Palin. I really don't think, as much as the people
involved like to sling arrows, "experience" is a huge issue with the average
voter.

The "rank and file," in this case, are the far-right conversatives who
love the fact that she supported Buchanan in '96 and '00. And that's
the overall problem McCain has -- at this late date in the campaign,
he still has to shore up his base. That should have happened during
the primaries. To do it now will only alienate everyone else.

And that base is shrinking; whatever hopes he had attracting Democrats
and Independents evaporated on Friday.

And if "experience" isn't a huge issue with the average voter, then
McCain wasted two months of valuable time challenging Obama on it.

Dear god -- even his senior campaign advisor Charlie Black said,
"“She’s going to learn national security at the foot of the master for
the next four years."

Honestly -- was Palin the most qualified person  to succeed him should
he not be able to complete his term that he could find? McCain met her
_one_ time in February. Christ almighty.

I'm sure she's an outstanding mother whose family adores her. But this
is one of the most irresponsible decisions I've seen yet this campaign
cycle.

***********************************
ummmmmmmmmmm no
the most irresponsible move so far is Obama asking (or is it demanding?)
that the justice department investigate people who say negative things about
him. Sadly, however, the media, and the Joebama followers will ignore tha,
becuase it's 'our guy,' so it's okay.

The issue is the ad violating campaign rules of advocacy.

David Frum's the only conservative I've read today who makes sense
with the pick:

What this does is put the McCain meme about Obama's "inexperience" off
the table. Should he continue with that, he'll be laughed out of Dodge.

****************************************
That's true, unless and until they attack Palin's inexperience. THis is what
makes it brilliant, which was my original point. They're politicians. I'm
betting they'll take the bait, and, once they do, they can't say a damn
thing when McCain slings back.

Obama will be smart to not say anything but just watch Palin self-
destruct when asked about anything substantial. Such as how she and
McCain reconcile over their differences on ANWR -- she's for it, he's
against it. Does he change his mind, thus opening himself to flip-
flopping? Then there's this reassuring Palin quote: "I've been so
focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war
in Iraq."

TPM suggests an ad right after Palin's acceptance speech at the RNC:

A one-minute spot featuring Hillary Clinton herself, talking to the
camera and laying into Palin on the issues, her complete lack of
qualifications, and the temerity of the McCain campaign to think they
could get away with this. Then she urges anyone watching who might
have supported her to get out there and support Barack Obama.

Then it closes simply with Obama walking on to the set to shake
Hillary's hand: "I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message."
