Non-Trip Non-Report, Part 3 of 3

Part 3 of 3 (the disappointing conclusion)

At the end of Part Two we were entering
California on Friday June 20. It turns out
that the movers were delivering on the
last day of the window, so instead of
having to rush to the new place on Friday
we could take our time and arrive on
Sunday.

So we decided to detour to Southern
California and hang out on the coast.
The coast was a good idea, as Friday
was still the heat wave, with near-record
temperatures in the LA area.

Which of these is most surprising:
California now has exit numbers on
its highway signs but still no mile markers.
There are a lot of aggressive drivers in
SoCal. The town of Ventura (where we
stayed) actually has a longer name.
One of the guys on the radio was
called Mr. Smiley. The traffic on US-101
in SoCal was quite heavy at 11:30 pm
on a Friday night. The University of
California at Santa Barbara is not in
Santa Barbara. Parking at the Santa
Monica Pier costs $7 if you get there
at 10 pm, and lots of folks were lined
up for the privilege.

One of the coolest things we saw while
on that pier had nothing to do with all
those nutty amusements on offer--'twas
seeing the full moon rise over LA.

Saturday was a relaxing day, spent
mainly in Santa Barbara. It was
cooler but still warmish. There was
a street fair going on a few blocks
inland, and we hung out there a bit.
We saw the Mission as well.
We were going to go on one of those little
cruises they have at the harbor but we got
there a little too late. We did hang
out by the harbor a while.

The next day we drove north to
the Bay Area, stopping first in the
charming/quaint/annoying Danish-style
town of Solvang. We were also going to
stop in a winery at Paso Robles but
we never did see the turnoff for it.
In the early evening, we rolled into
the Bay Area, found the new place,
and had our first meal at quite an
upscale restaurant: In-N-Out Burger.
Mui tasty.

Thus ends the trip report, with
about 3500 miles covered in a mere
10-plus days. It will be lonely out
here for a while, as there are certainly
no a.f.l. regulars anywhere near here,
but hopefully the lovely weather will
make up for it....
